About The Niehoff Lectures

The Niehoff Lecture is the Mercantile Library’s signature event each year. It is a night to celebrate the greatest and most respected writers of our time. From the start it has been a talented and eclectic group.

The series began in 1986 because of the vision and munificence of Buck and Patti Niehoff. The first lecture featured comedian Jonathan Winters. Tom Wolfe was the 4th speaker, Ray Bradbury the 8th, and Julia Child the 12th. Since then, Joyce Carol Oates, Salman Rushdie, Seamus Heaney, Robert Caro, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Zadie Smith have all told us stories and made us think.

The Niehoff Lecture, a formal event, is the Library’s only fundraiser each year, with crowd sizes nearing 600 people. Money raised at the Niehoff Lectures helps The Mercantile Library be a more thoughtful and welcoming place.
