Tsunami: The Tidal Wave as Introduced by Lafcadio Hearn and Others
Professor Junko Umemoto
In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of journalist Lafcadio Hearn’s arrival in the United States, we are partnering with the Japan Research Center of Greater Cincinnati in hosting professor Junko Umemoto, Ph.D., of Japan’s Nihon University. Lafcadio Hearn lived and worked in Cincinnati in the late 19th century, writing for The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Commercial, and Ye Giglampz. He was also known to frequent the Mercantile Library.
He eventually settled in Japan where he became one of the first “gaijin” (foreigners) to become a citizen of that nation. Professor Umemoto’s lecture will touch on Hearn’s life here, but her focus will be on the earliest Western use “Tsunami” to describe a tidal wave.
